Test Drive Meme #1

When waking from a bad dream
Don't you sometimes think it's real?

Arrival

You may be in the middle of a battle. You may be flying an airplane. You may just be eating a sandwich. But whatever was just happening, you blink your eyes open, and you're in the middle of a street with quite a few other people. High rise buildings loom above you, futuristic but also almost... retro? A woman walks by in full 1950s getup (Do you know this style? Or is this something foreign?). A man walks by in a fedora, clutching his briefcase.

Another man in a fedora appears from the building in front of you, looking shifty and preoccupied as he makes his way toward the street. Then he notices you and the group of strangers around you, and blinks in confusion.

"Hey, where's the parade?"

A voice quietly demands to know where 'Jones' is, and he pulls a tiny... radio? from his belt, talking back to it.

"Quit your yapping, I'm here, Mildred. What is it? Over."

'We've got a huge temporal disturbance in the government district. See anything out there? Over,' Mildred asks.

"Nope, just a bunch of weirdly-dressed peo-" He glances up at you. "...ple. Actually cancel that. Yeah, I think I just did. I'll be in in a minute. Over and out."

Jones gives a polite smile, looking worried. "Ah, so folks, I'm going to ask you to follow me to my office. I'll explain as much as I can and see what we can do about accommodations for you, unless we can get you back to your homes right away."

The man explains his name is William Jones. He's with the Athean government, and will be taking care of you during your stay in Eleria. He explains where you are and that they have no idea why or how you're here, but their best investigators are on it! For now, you're to make yourselves comfortable and find a job. Try to fit in, have some fun! Eleria is the best city in the universe!

He leads the group to a large hall (a banquet hall, maybe) with bathrooms off it. After much discussion with many people, they've decided to keep you here for the first week or so while they try to get some housing open and/or try to figure out how to send you back.

Your Digs

It's a cold cement floor, but it's better than nothing. They've put sleeping bags and pillows down at the very least, and there is a small pile of blankets near the front of the room. Hope you don't have to fight over them!

The bathrooms are small, with stalls of toilets and sinks with a large mirror over them. In case of emergencies, they did build a shower stall in the corner, but that's one per bathroom. And, unfortunately, the water seems to quickly go to scalding hot when the toilets are flushed.

Jazz music is filtered in the hall throughout the day, but turned off at night/early morning. Though sometimes mistakes are made. Were you trying to sleep? Terribly sorry about that loud saxophone. It's turned off quickly, though! This place seems to have a lot of problems despite how wonderful it all seems.

There's a kitchen right off the banquet hall, a real chef's kitchen. You're told to go ahead and help yourself to anything in the refrigerator, freezer, or pantry. There hasn't been a banquet lately, so most of the food is frozen, like pizza, burritos, or little meals. The refrigerator has some basic ingredients like eggs, milk, etc, but not too many fresh things. The pantry seems to have a lot of food staples but mostly... beans. Refried beans, green beans, kidney beans... Weird.

A smaller refrigerator in the back has some good stuff, but you're obviously not meant to find this. This stuff is for the holiday going on right now, for the staff at this building. Chocolate truffles, raspberry scones, fluffy angel cake, and more. But be warned! These desserts seem to have effects on your mood the more you eat them. In fact, that's what this holiday is about, sort of. The scientists around here are in on it, infusing those sweet treats with a chemical that helps you release your emotions. The Elerians use it to get extra happy with a full stomach, but it can make you feel sadder, madder, or goofier. You don't become out of control... Well, unless you eat a lot!

So Happy Together

You're not stuck in your banquet hall home, and Jones makes that very clear. It's a holiday! And Ulia is all about letting loose and having fun. The government is providing each visiting character with an allowance for the month, making the lump sum a little larger in hopes of keeping them happy. That leaves you with quite a lot of extra money. They also give you a watch, handsome and understated. But pull up the face, and a hover screen pops up. It has video, audio, and text functions. It can also save text notes, audio files, video files, takes pictures, and comes with just a few 1950s songs they were able to preserve. Only the visiting characters have these watches - well, and Jones.

The government buildings are pretty roped off except the banquet hall. But you could stroll down the avenue and visit a park! Elerians love a good game of miniature golf or baseball, if you find yourself wanting to be outside. Be warned, though! The Elerians are truly cheaters when it comes to any game. Watch that ball, or they might just tap it in.

Everyone in the arts district is dressed to the nines in 1950s-wear for Ulia, and giggly, to boot! In fact, they seem to get more and more excited as the evenings roll on. There are plenty of restaurants selling food advertised to make you happier than an Earthling with a hotdog! Of course, it's the same as the food at the hall; It only enhances your current emotions. But who wouldn't be happy during Ulia? Maybe watch the hot dog stands. Some of them don't advertise the emotion enhancing very well. There are plenty of dance halls, plays, and movies to go to! Cary Grant and Grace Kelly on the screen, 1950s music, and -

- Oh yeah. A play on the end of Earth. This may be touchy subject for some of the visitors, and the title didn't imply it would be about the final conflict. It's at least a poignant take on a girl's last few months on Earth, about watching places gear up for a war. But it may be too soon for some of you.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun! Jones is available for questioning, though he may know way less than you'd hoped. And, I mean... you are sleeping in a government building, if you want to explore it. A lot of the important stuff is locked away, and the doors seem to make it impossible to make a spatial jump or tear it down. Even just lockpicking isn't going to work here now, with the tricky locks you'll find. Keep thinking, though.

A Roll of the Dice

Although... Mildred (Jones' secretary) does seem to leave to go to the bathroom a lot. Do you dare rifle through her desk? If you do, you might be able to find a piece of information. But if you do, you could also get caught. The consequences of that will be unknown to your character, but when they move in their apartment, it will be bugged. Whether they find them and dispose of them or don't find them is up to you.

If you have any questions, please ask them on the question thread! Threads on this can be game canon if both parties agree and both are accepted into the game. Happy tdm-ing!

a. the cake is not a lie

[Okay so... first, this all sounds like bullshit. Second, he has no time for this. He tries and tries to explain this. Even threatens Jones. Luckily, Jones doesn't hold it against him, but... the idiot really doesn't know anything helpful, does he?

He goes snooping pretty early in the kitchen, and that angel food cake is his. Now. He gobbles it down mopily, whacking any hands trying to get a piece away with his fork.
]

My cake. Not yours. You think you need cake? I need cake.

[He stuffs another bite in his mouth, chewing and staring at you.]

b. this is the end of the world

[It's after the play, and this thirteen year-old is walking in, scoffing. He's eaten way too much cake. He walks over to the poster for the play, looking up at the character's picture.]

You think this is how this ends? Huh?! Well, it's not! It's not pretty tears and poetic speeches!

[He's making a bit of a spectacle. Maybe try to steer him out of here?]
